Sunday 24th May saw the return to the track of Smugglers Haven, who has had an extended winter break to be certain that she was over any ill effects of her nasty and uncharacteristic fall at Taunton in the Autumn of 2025. She is practically perfect in every way, and she repaid us for this patience with an impressive victory in a small, but competitive race at Fontwell.
She was a little hesitant jumping at first but Lily, who knows her so well, soon got her back in her usual rhythm and the others folded behind her to leave her to win by slightly too large a distance! I will have to hope that the handicapper sees that she did not have much to beat in the end, as I would like to give her one more run over hurdles before we return to chasing.
We bought Smugglers Haven because being out of a half-sister to Limini, she has a similar profile to Plaid Maid, the mother of our home bred Champions Coneygree, Carruthers and Flintham. So far, on the track, she is exceeding expectations and I am optimistic that we will get some Black Type wins before she retires to stud.
