We try to go to as many of the sales as we can, and the Goffs Land Rover Sale is always very well attended, and you can usually find some amazing horses there.
Once our horses were exercised (which meant an even earlier start than normal) we headed off to the auction, feeling excited about seeing the horses we thought looked interesting in the flesh and perhaps spotting some undetected talent that we could go on to develop.
Anyone who knows our training ethos here at Mark Bradstock Racing, will know that we like to buy youngsters that are unbroken. It means we get to train them and ensure they are getting the best start in life.
You may also know that our success with the mare Plaid Maid, who won seven races and bred Carruthers as well as our rather well-known Coneygree (2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner no less), means that we are always keen to find another mare who can be just as successful.
While mares sometimes get overlooked for their size and possible temperament issues, we feel that we are able to give them that little bit more attention and TLC which they often need to thrive and there is always the massive bonus that you can breed from them once their (hopefully successful) career is over. Every winner is received with great joy at the Bradstock’s yard but one that you have been involved in breeding is just that little bit more satisfying, so we went to the sales with high hopes of finding the right mare for the job.
We bought a beautiful three year old by Kings Theatre out of a mare who is a half-sister to the French-bred National Hunt racehorse Azertyuiop, and has all the credentials to make a top class race mare as well as a broodmare at a later stage. Willie Mullins was sad to see a Kings Theatre mare leave Ireland and congratulated us on our purchase, so a great day at the sales and we left feeling very excited for her future!
She arrived safely a few days ago and is being syndicated at the moment so if anyone is interested in a 10th share for £3,000, please do get in touch as quickly as you can as we have already had a lot of interest!
